Round 1: Do You Have a Quick Networking Story to Share…. by Wed the 10th at 4PM?

Do you have a networking story to share and time to quickly write it or call us and tell it? We’re looking for stories to illustrate principles in a new networking book!

Whether it’s in person or online, or somewhere in between, we would like to hear your experiences.

We need best networking experiences and worst experiences.

Just 1 – 2 paragraphs, first person (“I”) so we get a sense of what you and the other person(s) did that worked great and didn’t work well at all. (Tell us if you want to remain anonymous.)

Send an email to anoramcgaha@yahoo.com or email me on inSide919 (I think we have to be friends for that to work, but maybe not!) If you don’t like to write, then you can call it in to 919-741-9449 – and give us a summary with your name.

What’s in it for YOU?
You get to contribute to Martin Brossman’s upcoming Networking book. We’ll have a list of contributors to thank, and if we include your story, you’ll be included.

Deadline: Round 1 – by Wednesday the 10th at 4 PM.
(We’ll have several rounds in case you miss this one.)

What are the photos?
The top one is from Latino Diamante Awards Dinner in Durham, and yes, that is the Mayor on the left. The bottom one, is a Speedway sign as a reminder that we’re working fast to collect networking stories. (Check the gas price!)

What! Only 6 Success Stories? What about yours?

We need your help. Right now there are only 6 success stories in the inSider Success Stories Discussion.

We would really benefit from hearing the variety of ways that being part of inSide919 has helped you.
Would you share your experience?

It would be a wonderful holiday gift for the community, to pass along the good news.

If you can take a couple of minutes to write yours down, or to call me with the story, it would be a great help to us.

We will be drawing from these stories for articles we’re going to write about inSide AreaCodes. And, for sure, I’ll check back with you before using any identifying information.

Happy Holidays! May the new year be brighter for all of us.

Winter Winds Carrousing

Winds carrousing like a pack of wolves, tearing around the hilltop, no apologies for pushes and shoves, just blasting through.

The day is warm, but the fiesty winds remind of winter. With the barren branches of the trees, there’s no mistaking this warmth for Spring, or Summer, or Fall. Winter is here.

Outside some birds are calling loudly, happy for the safflower seed about; easy food. The sun inches its way towards the distant treetops beyond the rooflines, shifting the light so quickly this time of day, the visible darkening, minutely, minute by minute.

Too fast, the earth turns too fast; there’s just not enough time to do it all. Can’t work any faster… a faster computer maybe? The choice is to choose less.

But I’m an internet sailor, a captain on the high seas, a pilot of the skies, my value for my income comes from my explorations, the treasures I bring from my virtual travels. Not journeying out for years at a time, as sailors did centuries ago, instead for a day at a time, sometimes from before dawn, until 6 or 7 hours after dusk. Trading feeling the gentle experience of the movement of time, as measured by sun, for the high intensity concentration to acquire virtual treasures, to trade for dollars for those who still have them; dollars to pay the gas and electric bills, the water and garbage, gas, car insurance, payment and food.

So it is with a tremendous appreciation for the kindness of the forces of life that I now work in this sacred room with a view, and trees that demonstrate the forces of the breezes. “A room with a view and a breeze in which to write,” was the prayer so many years ago. Now, while the wind races the leaves across the far greenway, and threatens to tear the last tenacious oak leaves from their stems, I am inspired to do what I find meaningful… to give name to the experience of being.

The sun, now a neon orange glow slipping just below the tree line.

During this Holiday season, my wishes for health and peace and hope for you, your friends and family, our communities and our world.

Use the LINK shape in the Gray Bar to create Active Links in your text!

Creating active links (hyperlinks) is one of the most valuable, handy tools available. In these ning.com communities, on the top of most of the places we write, there is a gray bar with a “B” for bold, “I” for italics, U for underline, S for strikeout, a clasp or chain link, for creating hyperlinks, a green rectangle for adding images and photos, and a tiny white page for adding a file.

Start a blog post and see it.

So here’s what you do.

Highlight the text you want to add the link to, like it might be

my web site

or www.mywebsite.com

Then click on the chain icon in the gray bar and type in the web address. It needs to have the
http:// then usually www and the address.

Click OK, you’ll see some extra text added around your words, and that will make it an active link when you save your post.

The extra text is HTML, which you don’t have to learn to use.

I hope this helps you start adding more live links in your posts on inSide919!~

Twitter: “Fun, efficient and rewarding” – Today at 11:30 at the BNC and on MY Page

A latecomer to Twitter, I jumped in with enthusiasm as I discovered I could learn from some of the foremost leaders in social media, and some of the most technologically advanced experts in other fields, by subscribing to their Twitter feeds.

The two line (140 character) feeds, are just like seeing a list of headlines pass before you, allowing you at a quick glance to see what is of interest and what to ignore.

Some people are more social and like to share more personal notes. I’m interested in learning – the internet has amazing services and information and on Twitter, I get to have a team of experts pass their findings my way.

Today, Tuesday the 10th at the Business Networking Center in Cary, at 11:30, 919′s very own Martin Brossman and Wayne Sutton will give you the latest on what you need to know about Twitter.

There are many interesting, informational, useful vehicles on the internet. For me, bottom line about Twitter, is that it’s fun, efficient and rewarding.

Unemployed but Carrying Hope: Would you like to share your story in a local blog?

If you’re unemployed, perhaps even under employed, affected by the current downturn, and you’re still carrying hope, inSide919 has a member who would like to hear your story in your own words and take a portrait of you for a blog series.

I first met Charles Gupton by responding to a query he sent through HARO (www.Helpareporterout.com). His desire to write about people who have been hit with hard times but have a hope that they can share really caught my attention. Sustaining hope is essential, and hearing about how people do it in the face of hardship can help spawn hope. We met for coffee at a cafe on Kildaire Farm Road and Cary Parkway in Cary, and I was very impressed with his warm inspired personality. When he showed me his portrait photos, they took my breath away.

So I’d like to invite you to ask people you know who might consider doing this. Just meeting a professional photographer like Charles is fun enough, and getting heard and seen through the kind lense that he offers would be a treat.

You can reach Charles by emailing:cg@charlesguptonphoto.com or looking him up on inSide919: profile/CharlesGupton

Free Publicity Sites Confirmed by Panel of Local Newsroom Leaders at Shaw University

Shaw University had a panel discussion called “New Energy through New Media” which showed on CAR24 7-8PM today. The news professionals on the show just confirmed all the free local sites to post to for free publicity.

WRAL’s Golo site has 11000 members and about 100,000 unique visitors per month. You can upload all kinds of media, and post blog posts. It’s an active community with lots of feedback on posts.

News & Observer’s Triangle.Share.com
site allows you to upload your own written content and photos, video and more. They have an events site called ENJOY.

NBC17′s MYNC.com is eager to have all the content you want to post. You can post press releases, comments, short posts and longer ones, photos, and video, either associated with a story or not. You can post at the county level, or at the level of specific towns. To post in more than one county, you have to repost your story in that county section. MYNC.com also has a show that draws from all the content that people load, so you have the chance to get TV coverage of your story.

Further, MYNC.com has cameras and video cameras on loan for people who will commit to uploading content.

ABC Channel 11
has a Community Calendar dedicated to non-profits, where they show local events at the top of every hour. (I didn’t hear how to get the events to them or if they have an online site.)

Getting into the News? As to what stories the news is looking for? Anything related to the economy, and anything related to whatever news stories are hitting the media. Make it your job to find out which reporters are reporting on the area of your interest and give them a call. At the N&O reporters have to pitch 2 stories every morning. You’re helping them if you offer them a relevant story. They said a lot more about this, having relationships with the reporters is very helpful.

The following were not mentioned probably because they are not specifically local:

Zvents is a great site to post your events for free. The events are actually syndicated (redistributed) to both the N&O’s Triangle.Share.com and MYNC.com, probably many other sites as well. You can also list a performer (speaker) and local sites.

Eventful is another great event site, however if you are charging for the event, it is set up to sell tickets and take a cut. For free events, you can post it for no charge. Eventful also sends out a newsletter of weekly events to people who have registered at the site.

Press Releases There are numerous sites on which you can post press releases for free. How far they get picked up is questionable, but they can come up in online searches. It is true that press releases distributed through paid services like PR NewsWire get picked up widely, but then you pay about $ 160 for statewide distribution and about $ 670 for national distribution.

Blogs and Bloggers Lastly, for this brief overview of free publicity sites online, putting content in your own blog also makes it available on search engines, and connecting with bloggers who have a wider audience on a topic related to your news is an excellent strategy. It does take a little time to research, but looking at a site like Technorati will help you start from the top blogs down. This is especially helpful for businesses that have a neat new product – there are many bloggers that review new products for their subscribers.

Go ahead, get your news out there, and if you don’t have the time to do it, there are many good people on inSide919, including myself, who have services to do it for you.

Nice to Meet You, Last Night and Today

Last night at Oh Mulligans I had the chance to renew my friendships with a number of people I’ve met through inSide919 and Martin Brossman classes. Just seeing each other in another setting reinforced my sense of familiarity. I met and talked with about ten people I hadn’t met before. I saw several more who I recognized from inSide919 and will make a point next time I see them to introduce myself and visit.

I was very glad I made the 60 mile round trip from Apex to Wake Forest. The food was good, people were talking and it was a good time. I’m taking Bill Davis’ 100 Days to Abundance Class about jump starting business, and the message I’ve gotten so far, is that I need to meet you, and you, and you. Relationships grow businesses, and they sure do grow fun. Thank you all of you who came out.

Today I’ll also be out with an opportunity to meet new friends and old, at the Maserati of Raleigh dealership thanks to inSider Diogenes Ruiz.

I met Diogenes through Martin Brossman, called him up to see if I could chat with him, and from there embarked on a volunteer project that launched my work in social media marketing and publicity – while learning about some of the best socks on the planet – the only ones my husband wears now! (Sierra Club Socks)

Diogenes has a passion for luxury cars and is working at Maserati of Raleigh. When he called me about my Apex Massage for Women business and asked, “How about coming to our show room with your chair to give massage to our visitors and guests?” The answer was why not! Some people have imagination and creativity, daring and playfulness, and it’s a delight to see the ease with which they experiment and learn in life. Diogenes is one of those people. So I’m looking forward to being around him, to saying hello to anyone who drops in and to offering a rest on my massage chair to reduce the tension – like readjusting the seat belt so people can breathe.

This is just for fun. Just to meet some more people. Just to introduce more people to the dealership where Diogenes is working. Don’t know about you, but it takes a lot of guts for me to walk into a luxury car dealership. Today no courage needed, the doors are open and casual visitors are very welcome. So if you feel like it, just come.

Have fun today and this weekend. Summer’s well on it’s way to September and it’s Friday!

Good Morning! 7 More InSiders Until 1000 People!

Amy and Rob are the 993rd people on inSide919! By my calculations that means 7 more and the big 1000 has been reached! Very exciting!

I bet, if some of the people who joined two for one – like Amy and Rob, joined singly, we’d be over 1000, but we have to go by the numbers, and the numbers add up to 7 more!~

If you haven’t begun to feel the excitement about inSide919 yet, take the time to search for topics you are interested in and then drop in on those people. Look at the photos of the members and see who they would like to meet. See who the newest people are and welcome them. See who the old timers are and check in on what they’ve been doing. Join a discussion. Post a blog post. Drop in on the Introduce Yourself forum and see who catches your attention.

Participation creates belonging and new associates and friends.

Long ago, when I was one of the only Euro-Americans in a Chinese church in Massachusetts, I heard the minister say something that I never forgot. “If you want to belong, you have to participate.” So simple. So true. Believe it or not, I was helping teach the Chinese American children Chinese, and it went along way to making me feel part of. I couldn’t hide that I looked different, I stuck out like a Westerner among the sea of people with black hair. But I could be part of.

Wishing everyone health, inspiration and hope this holiday season.
