Link Deep for SEO Benefit

Inbound Links Benefit Your Website

A link to your site is like a vote. If you randomly ask 10 people from 10 different locations what they thought of you or your site, and all said exactly the same thing, you’d walk away thinking something was fishy, or rigged, wouldn’t you? That’s how the search engines view links; if they are all nearly the same, pointing to the identical location, they will take note, and adjust (possibly penalize you) for it.

Simply put, what does it tell a search engine when all your links are coming in to the home page? Most probably that you have a shallow site, of little value, or that your links were generated by automation, rather than by the value of your site.

Conclusion: Make sure you’re getting links from as many pages as possible, but mix them up so that there is varied content. Also, get those links pointing to as many different pages as possible. The search engines will view this as natural, relevant, and give your site some extra “juice” when it comes to ranking.

SEO Is Ultimately Social

Be Social with Social Bookmarking

Who would you trust, a good friend who had a great experience and highly recommended a product or shop, or a nondescript add posted in your local Penny Saver magazine? It would be the source you considered most reliable, hands down. That’s why, if you have lots of friends, or a large following on a blog, facebook, or other social media site, you should provide social bookmarking. It’s the web’s version of “word of mouth” for passing on recommendations.

Make it easy for your visitors to social bookmark your website, creating important links that the search engines value. It can greatly assist in “spreading the word” and generating free, unilateral, and varied link-backs to your site. There are plenty of free social bookmarking widgets available; google will offer many suggestions if you search for bookmarking widgets. See for your self.

More Like a Personal Assistant

What First Impression Do You Give?

Most businesses think of their website as a large online business card.  Given the size and detail you can display there, I believe your website acts more like your Personal Assistant than a business card.

If first impressions are lasting impressions, how do you think people are perceiving you if all they have to go by is your website?

Is it like a poorly dressed worker, who looks sloppy or unprofessional?

Is it like a under education or over educated receptionist, that customers can’t figure out what is being said?

Or, is it like the ever busy beaver that’s never in one place, visitors to your site have a hard time finding what they are looking for? Or worse, when they search for you on Google, do folks have to scroll down several pages to find you?

If you don’t like your responses to these questions, you may want to consider a face lift, or total overhaul of your website. “Being attractive and being credible can and do go together.” ~ Lisa Guerrero

Monitor Where You Stand – Part II

Web Traffic – What You Don’t Know Could Be Costing You

Like good accounting, monitoring where your business stands money-wise, via cash-flow, is essential for any company to stay healthy. The same is true for your business website.

Do you know how much traffic your website gets? How many unique daily, and repeat, visitors are coming in? How long do visitors stay on your site? How many pages do they visit before leaving? Does your site convert, that is does the site cause a visitor to call you, visit your store, or make an on-line purchase?

Without a vision, you’re likely missing opportunities. And, like bad accounting, if you don’t track or monitor how your website is doing, you truly don’t know its health.

BLOG = Better Listing On Google

Panda Update – Original Content Matters

Because the search engines are so hungry for new content, they give a ranking boost to any site that updates their material on a regular basis. That’s why in general, sites that include blogs perform better in search results than sites that remain static.

With Google’s most recent Panda update, solid & fresh content is ever more necessary. The following sites will be hurt the most:

  • Folks republishing products on Affiliate sites
  • People simply rebroadcasting numerous rss feeds
  • Sites that are scraped (content from numerous sources) with little to none of the content being original
  • Sites that are static (remain the same forever and ever…)

Concluding, who’s company would you rather have; someone who’s alive, speaking and breathing, or someone who’s “mostly dead”? The search engines view it the same way.

Content Based Spam Classifier by Google

Panda Update Follow-up Plans

According to Matt Cutts, google’s Anti-Spam Enforcer, google plans to get back to the core spam free basics in 2011.

Here’s a summary:

1) Google will be rolling out a content based spam classifier (if it looks questionable or spammy to a user, it will be detected by google)

2) Identify and punish sites that use “keyword stuffing” spam

3) Identify and punish the sources of blog comment spam

4) Identify and reward quality linking

5) Improve communications with webmasters (primarily letting folks know about hacked sites and what to do to remedy the problem(s), and if in trouble, ways of being reconsidered)

Here’s a link to the youtube video if you’d like to hear it straight from Matt himself:

What’s the take-away?

Quality, original, clean content will continue to be rewarded, and anything else will slowly, but steadily, be appropriately treated. You’ve nothing to worry about if you stick to ethical “white hat” practices.

Good Content Weathers The Storms of Search Algorithm Updates

Tornadoes Wreak Havoc

According to a National Weather Service last Saturday’s record-breaking storms produced at least 25 tornadoes that struck throughout North Carolina, killing 23.  Online, however, Google’s Panda update, like a massive worldwide storm, continues to spawn search result wreckage for many online companies who were not providing quality content on their sites.

At the outset of Google’s algorithm update release, @EzineArticles took a pretty big hit in their rankings till, as Google was encouraging, they purged some poor quality works and tightened up their submission standards. Accordingly, @EzineArticles saw a boost in their search results, which is a win for people searching for better content.

On the heals of the broader worldwide Panda release, eHow is now seeing a marked decline (~32%) in their organic visibility in their Google’s search results.  Certainly a wake up call for many. Conversely, to the joy of some, Wiktionary.com (a multi-lingual content dictionary) and Dailymotion.com (a video content site) were given nearly a 30% boost in their results.

Take Away (as it applies to web building)  – Good behavior and ‘white hat’ SEO strategies will continue to be rewarded, while ‘black hat’ and some ‘gray hat’ approaches will continue to be punished.   “Good, quality content is now King, Queen and everything else!”

How did you fare in the storm?  Feel free to comment.

SEO’s Tale of the Long Tail – Part 1

Long Tail SEO Pages Yield Better Results

I knew of a man, who for sake of anonymity I’m using a different keyphrase for this illustration, ranked number 1 for the search term, “home theater systems”. ‘Impressive.’ you may say, however, would you venture to guess how many sales that term benefited him? Would you believe the answer is zero? That’s right, none, zilch, nada… ‘Why?’ you maybe wondering; the answer is quite simple.

The typical web searcher, for educational reasons, frequently uses high level, general search terms like “home theater systems” only to learn. Boiled down, the goal of this search term is to find out what systems are out there, and what the latest innovation of this technology is. This is a far cry from someone who is searching, to purchase, a home theater system.

Once a web searcher has found, or learned the ‘essentials’ of the technology, or product, they move from a learning mode to a comparison mode. This is where the searcher will typically compares and contrasts brands, in the case of our home theater system, e.g. – Sony vs. Samsung vs. Bose vs. Panasonic, etc. to see which exact features the person wants.

Now we’ve narrowed things down, the web searcher (customer or buyer) is educated and knows precisely what they after, and are probably at this point shopping for the best combination of price, service and warranty. This narrowed search, with a lengthy search term, such as, “Bose Lifestyle 28 series III home theater system” is what’s called the ‘long tail’. The results will be far less in numbers of competing site pages, but whoever dominates the results for this ‘buying term’ will likely win the sale or purchase of the searcher.

Here’s the take away, if you optimize your site additionally for long tail terms, those specific pages may have significantly less traffic, however, in exchange, folks landing on those site pages will very likely be extremely qualified buyers/users.

Considering your own website, are you targeting the right visitors with the right keyphrases, or are you so generic that, even though you’re getting traffic, you’re seeing little to no goal results from your site, e.g. – sales conversions, sign-ups, click-thrus, etc.? Simply put, it’s not just traffic volume that counts, it’s quality, or qualified, traffic volume that counts.

So what if you have the bragging rights of being number one for a generic search term phrase if that search yields you nothing in return for all your efforts? No matter how you multiply or divide zero, the answer always remains zero.
