“No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.” –YODA, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
As I stand in the middle of a dozen mastermind students to teach this lesson every quarter for the last 4 years, I pick up a tissue between my thumb and forefinger.
I begin shaking my hand vehemently as though to let go of the tissue, saying “I am trying to drop this tissue.”
I can drop it or hold it, but trying actually is holding it! Everyone ‘gets’ the lesson in short order.
Trying is meaningless in my view. It’s an excuse to do nothing or make very little effort. It’s a place holder; an excuse. There is no power in trying. Do it or do not do it but don’t expect accolades for ‘trying’ anything. It’s an escape hatch to not be effective or gain results.
If it gets too hot ‘trying,’ most just stop right there. It’s when you DO something that you have results. You get nada for trying. Watch how many time you say “I’ll try to be on time.” No you won’t even try. It’s not top of mind. You haven’t given your Word. You might make it on time; you might not. But there is no incentive; and being on time, as example, is simply not important to you.
Saying you’ll try is an open ended excuse to do as much as you want, when you want, without commitment or giving your Word. It’s a space holder or saver, but nothing more.
Can you intentionally REMOVE that word from your vocabulary? Of course you can. DO IT for one week and watch your own results. It appears fleeting at first … you’ve said it before you’ve caught yourself even saying it. With a little practice however you will find others will begin to count on you to BE your Word. If you are a ‘tryer,’ people do not count on you. Why would they? When you say you will be somewhere, you will be there … or you won’t, you’ll do it or not do it. That is personal power. This is one baby step that will move you quickly into leadership and be count-on-able to others. -
