What Are You Writing Right Now? Blog Hop

If you’re an author, it’s quite common to be asked at a reading what’s your next project. You always need to be working on something, or you might as well hang up your pen! The question, “What are you writing right now?” inspired this blog hop where a number of writers from all over the U.S. are writing  on “My Next Big Thing,” answering the same 10 questions  you see here.

I’m honored to be tagged by Mary L. Moore, author of Sleeping with Patty Hearst, a coming-of-age novel set in North Carolina in the 1970s. It’s a genre-bending novel that features a lost sister, an illicit affair and a pregnant teenager who elopes. Last year, Mary and Sleeping with Patty Hearst were featured in the Wonderland Book Club, the writers’-centered book club I’ve sponsored since 2008. I was so happy to be able to share Mary’s book with so many! In the blog hop, Mary wrote about a few of her favorite things and who she thinks would be ideal to portray her characters. Please check it out!

Now on to the hop:

1)   What is the working title of your next book?

Heroes Without Capes

2)    Where did the idea come from for the book?

I’m a poet and a person who is fascinated with death. And I’m not talking about physical death all of the time. There’s death of a relationship, a career or of an idea. Take my death fascination and pair it up with my love for the characters of pop culture. What are they thinking about when they are facing a deep moment of personal crises? When they are facing a death? Remember, death is life’s change agent and an important part of an author’s tool kit. Death makes the plot much more exciting and it tends to quickly bring out a character’s true nature.

Heroes Without Capes will be my first full-length poetry collection. Featuring mostly persona poems and a few odes, the theme is pop culture, historical figures and celebrities—sort of like a Jeopardy! Board. Predator, Darth Vader, Bruce the Shark, Kathy Griffin, the Devil, Hamburger Helper, Captain Bligh, and the Road Runner will all be making cameos. My characters reflect on their issues in these poems usually after a stressful episode in their life. We’ll also meet Nolan, the Split Foyer house who has insecurity issues and Dina the Jet who is a snarky fashionista. As you can probably guess, there’ll be a lot of humor in this book. I love dissecting ironies and exploring socio-economic class issues through my poems.

3)    What genre does your book fall under?

Poetry. I write long poems that are story-based and full of conflict.

4)    What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?

I’d have all of the original actors play their roles:

Bruce the SharkNative Australian Barry Humphries (who also is Dame Edna) as Bruce the Shark

darth vaderJames Earl Jones as Darth Vader (Vader doesn’t want to wear his cape in my poem)

PredatorKevin Peter Hall as the Predator

Road Runnerand The Road Runner as the The Road Runner

5) What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

We’re all heroes of our destiny. Some of us just take a little longer to get there.

6) Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

It will be traditionally published! Check back with me later on publishing details.

 7) How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?

I’m still writing the poems for Heroes Without Capes—this book will take about 2 years to complete and it will be published in 2014.

8) What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Graphic novels where the artist and the writer meet. This is definitely a genre-bending book! It’s for folks who hate poetry, but want love something short and funny. It’s also for folks who love my characters and want to see where I take their stories—fan fiction if you will.

9) Who or what inspired you to write this book?

I’m a child of the eighties and of pop culture. It’s how I relate in the world and yes, I proudly admit, I’m a die-hard Star Wars fan. In addition to being fascinated with death, I also want to bring life to many of my favorite characters I knew growing up: the Predator, Darth Vader and The Road Runner.

10) What else about the book might pique the reader’s interest?

Haven’t you always wondered where the Predator gets his groceries?

Don’t you think The Road Runner looks a tad feminine?

What does Darth Vader really think of the Emperor?

Find out the answers in my upcoming book!

What’s the one piece of advice you would give a new writer?

It’s all about making an appointment with yourself on the calendar and giving your own work top priority. I choose certain days of the week to get my own work done and this further trains my brain to get into the creative spirit. I’ve also found that contests, publication deadlines and open mics help me get motivated to produce new work and they can help you! Even when I was on maternity leave four years ago I wrote every day and used my online and offline poetry groups to keep me accountable. My advice is to write down your deadlines in your daily planner or on your smart phone. Also you need to write down your writing goals and be specific. How many markets do you want to submit to in a month? When you do you want your first draft of your book ready? Writing your goals down will make them real and measurable and will fuel your desire. You can also give yourself a reward when you do reach your goal—my reward is hanging out on Pinterest or Facebook.

5 Kinds of Video: Video Blog

Most people understand what a blog contains – it’s a grouping of posts with a focus. Businesses have blogs, services have blogs, products have blogs, even individuals have blogs.  I’ve read blogs written as though they’re by the family dog.

Why would you use a video as a blog post?

There are three main reasons you’d use a video as a blog post:

  • it adds variety to a text blog experience
  • it allows the readers/viewers to hear, see, and meet you.
  • it helps Search Engine Optimization. At this point in the ever-changing vista of online presence, Google likes video. What Google likes will increase your visibility.

A Video Blog is different from other videos in that it’s longer, and has more than one idea or piece of information. It’s also good to be conversational and even somewhat quirky. A video blog is an opportunity to show your personality. And a few – just a few – “umms” or “ahhhhs” or “soooo ‘s” are acceptable.

A video blog could use an on-the-go style:

This video was filmed with a Flip camera – and Alex was on a unicycle.

A video blog can add to your blogging schedule – and become a regular feature:

This is a regular blog post – on Tuesdays – on the blog FergusonValues.

Soft Touch Marketing

In the business world, a blog is one way to reach out and touch current and prospective clients. Research has shown that it takes between 8-12 soft touches till a client buys.  Video blogs are an effective soft touch, because they’re not intrusive and they add value.  The conversational tone in a video blog allows for personality to shine and provides an opportunity for a client to ask questions in a non-threatening, open forum.  Clients feel invested in your content and product even before they buy, because they feel they know you.  Use social media to promote your video blog – Facebook & Twitter are great avenues.

Hello – I’m Lori with Your Local Studio – we make professional videos in the studio, but since we began recording in the studio we’ve had people asking questions on how they could make their own videos at home. First we created the DIY Club. Then – at the beginning of 2013 we talked it over, and decided to do a series of 30 blog posts covering 5 topics for everyone even considering joining the DIY crowd. This post #6 of 30.

6 Reasons to Have Web & Blog Site WordPress Security

Computer Virus

“After all, just one virus on a computer is one too many.”

Our company, SEO for High Ranking, your SEO / Search Engine Marketing headquarters, builds traffic to client websites for continuous business growth. Optimization starts with a well-structured, dynamic website that employs what is known as a content management system, or CMS. Interestingly, in recent months, many small businesses have turned to WordPress, a powerful CMS based web tool. Because it creates blogs and websites in a very straight-forward fashion, and is very easily indexed by Google, it is growing in popularity.

But there are side effects your business might not be aware of as you create your social media strategy. Unfortunately, criminal elements are in everything you do. Any business can type a keyword, including your business, into the search engine; when the intended site pops up, it can quickly be redirected to graphic and lurid images and sites.

Although you can shut down the site, panic can indeed set in. These websites can be hacked in a devious ways. Script can be injected creating mass redirection.

These types of horrific client experiences have created a new mission for our company.

We have learned that vulnerabilities are not always with the server (computers where websites reside). Rather, malicious software is introduced through the inherent weaknesses with WordPress itself.

Here are the facts:these websites, when set up, have up to two dozen areas that can easily be exploited by malware programs and by experienced and knowledgeable hackers. Most developers simply are not aware of these flaws and think plugins will manage and minimize the issues. That is not the case.

Google can and does take these sites down when they involve inappropriate activity.

A hacked site impacts:

  1. Web visibility
  2. Business traffic
  3. Business reputation
  4. Productivity
  5. Time and repair cost
  6. Critical revenue

This latest service we offer is featured on WordPress Security Shieldwhich explains our mission and core values that involve client protection.

Please comment below; we are looking for your feedback to help make improvements. What issues have you had? The more examples the better so we can make the critical adjustments to virtually eliminatethese problems.

Does it Count if You Go Blog a Good Comment on Other People’s Blogs?

Personally I think it does. Last week I started a competitive deal with two friends living on separate continents. We wanted to encourage each other to get back to posting regularly. So I came back to blogging here, a practice I want to make a daily part of my life with lots of good web design and SEO resources. I challenged them to blog as well, in their own venues. it worked!

Both of these friends have actually posted blogs every day, both of them creating new word press blogs for the occasion. They are enjoying it I think, or so they say. My email messages to them, after each time I posted, were “Tag, you’re it!” It worked!

Seriously though, one waxed profound about her experience and shared with me for posting: “I found myself staring at a blank page full of preconceived notions of what a blog post should be. Ben Franklin, Hugh Laurie, and Oprah rolled into one amazing post – right? Yikes, talk about writer’s block! I decided my first effort would be like jumping into a cold lake. At first I would resist, but once in and splashing around, it could be lots of fun. And it was.”

The other shares: “don’t dither, just do it.” Can you hear a bit of an English accent there?

So, then, what do I do but fall victim to the same old same old – no time – and I had such a good headstart. The schedule got slamming overwhelming, and what is the first to go but the last thing to get started, despite my proclamations of intentions. Isn’t it always this way. Well, determined as I am, what I did instead of blogging here was to go on both of their websites and post good comments, like posts in themselves. So I counted those and I am only a day or two behind schedule.

I’d like to offer this journey to others as a live walk through starting a new habit. So many people are kind of afraid to post and blog here. With all the opportunities that Pat Howlett has made for those of us who blog on this site, it is simply absurd not to do so as part of marketing your business. Its hard to get going though. But if I can do it . . . you can do it. Just look at all the blog posts on the right there – in the column to the right on this page – scrolling by, one new post after another literally seconds apart. Phenomenal. Join in!

BLOG = Better Listing On Google

Panda Update – Original Content Matters

Because the search engines are so hungry for new content, they give a ranking boost to any site that updates their material on a regular basis. That’s why in general, sites that include blogs perform better in search results than sites that remain static.

With Google’s most recent Panda update, solid & fresh content is ever more necessary. The following sites will be hurt the most:

  • Folks republishing products on Affiliate sites
  • People simply rebroadcasting numerous rss feeds
  • Sites that are scraped (content from numerous sources) with little to none of the content being original
  • Sites that are static (remain the same forever and ever…)

Concluding, who’s company would you rather have; someone who’s alive, speaking and breathing, or someone who’s “mostly dead”? The search engines view it the same way.

When you Post a Blog, Tweet, or Comment online does it matter what words you use?

What do you think? Let’s look at this logically.

Say you go to a restaurant for lunch and you love it and want to support this business so it will stay in business. Lets call it Annie’s Lunch Place. What do you say?

Had a great lunch over at Annies!

Organic salads with mango and avocado on gluten-free bread at Annies in Cary (web link)

What’s the difference? – how do you react? Yum I know what I want for lunch today, I’ll go there, or gee what is so great about that place? never heard of it.

That’s the human reaction

Now let’s talk about the search engine reactions. The search engines are word organizers. Every word on every site is organized into a database. These are organized into categories and sub-categories. Then the sub-categories are worded in certain phrases of words such as: restaurants, Cary, organic vegetables, fruits, Celiac disease, gluten-free . . . and guess how these phrases are decided? Not by the little guy behind the big screen in OZ, but by the exact wording people type into search engines.

Logically, and only logically, the search engine catalogs the words by what people search for. If you match the words someone searches for then you come up on the list in that page. You may be the 50,000dth entry or the 5th. That is often based on how many people “like” you in various places – their testimonials given in blogs, tweets and comments. But you come up on exactly those words.

Say our “Annies Lunch Place’ is using keyword phrases like “organic salads” and this month “mango and avocado” are “in” and a large population base in Cary requires “gluten-free” bread because they have Celiac disease or are allergic to wheat. All these keyword phrases are prominent on her website’s titles and headlines and pages because she knows what phrases people are searching for. Then if we use these words in our comments blogs and tweets, people will not only give Annie blessings on her homepage but also on her organic page and her gluten-free page. This is the idea. This differentiates her from every other lunch place in Cary or wherever. The search engines can give her another boost for her niche foods. Google might pop her up a notch higher. But this would not happen if you said “Had a great lunch at Annies!” – exuberance is wonderful but it doesn’t boost Annies rank any and keep her in business.

Now apply this to your own business. What do you want people posting for you? What words do you want to rank on? Do you use these terms in your website, in your blogs, in your tweets, in your posts? Do your fans know them enough to use them for you?

The secret is all in the keywords. Keyword Phrases tell all.

For some great keyword help – come to my “Gorilla Hands-On Keyword workshop” – Thursday 8pm at the Center for Excellence. For just $ 25 you come in with your laptop and go out with your researched keyword phrases that you research there with guidance, and make a plan for where to put them online and how to position them so others will use them to post and tweet you.

Unemployed but Carrying Hope: Would you like to share your story in a local blog?

If you’re unemployed, perhaps even under employed, affected by the current downturn, and you’re still carrying hope, inSide919 has a member who would like to hear your story in your own words and take a portrait of you for a blog series.

I first met Charles Gupton by responding to a query he sent through HARO (www.Helpareporterout.com). His desire to write about people who have been hit with hard times but have a hope that they can share really caught my attention. Sustaining hope is essential, and hearing about how people do it in the face of hardship can help spawn hope. We met for coffee at a cafe on Kildaire Farm Road and Cary Parkway in Cary, and I was very impressed with his warm inspired personality. When he showed me his portrait photos, they took my breath away.

So I’d like to invite you to ask people you know who might consider doing this. Just meeting a professional photographer like Charles is fun enough, and getting heard and seen through the kind lense that he offers would be a treat.

You can reach Charles by emailing:cg@charlesguptonphoto.com or looking him up on inSide919: profile/CharlesGupton

Seeing Eye Blog

Apex Command 8-15-11

When I was born I weighed just a touch over three pounds. Two problems surfaced immediately from being born that tiny and two months early. Besides being the littlest dude in the maternity ward, I had some very serious challenges with my lungs and my eyes. Back in the 1950’s, babies of this size had trouble even surviving. I was very lucky. After almost six additional months in an incubator that corrected my breathing concerns and helped me see better, I came home pushing a robust five pounds. Funny, I do not remember a single thing.

So I have always had trouble seeing and have grown used to average sight over the years. Technology thinned the lenses over time, but things were always just a drop fuzzy. About a year ago, I was diagnosed with a right eye cataract that created extremely blurred vision. It got worse even though it was managed through new lenses twice in the past year.

On August 9th, I had Dr. Dean Dornic, of North Carolina Lasik Surgery, remove the cataract and replace the flawed human lens with a premium lens implant. Within 14 hours of surgery, the blur I had known my whole life was gone! I am seeing in HD for the very first time! I have never seen with such clarity and such focus! Driving at night is now a non-issue. I am so lucky and so pleased. It is like being reborn.

But the rest of this commentary is not really about eye sight. It is about business. Sometimes our business is clouded by the cataract of time that grows ever so slow. Sometimes business people continue to do the same thing over and over and time slowly goes by. We are clouded with our decisions and the multitude of them. We are sometimes so overwhelmed that we often will settle for average. We settle for that average because we believe we cannot correct our vision, our directions, and our goals. We blame the economy, consumer confidence, our competition, and even Congress but we are more than often blinded by our own excuses. We need help.

But this is personal and professional surgery you can do yourself! Bring a new lens of success with renewed clarity and focus to your business by getting training and advice. Find a mentor. Take some creative risks. Do something different; something you have never done. Involve others with similar interests. Take some chances. Create a collaborative endeavor with others. There is great power in numbers.

My business, VTR Consulting LLC, and our partnering company, I.M.U. Social Media, now has that post cataract attitude. My life has changed immensely in just a few days and I now have even more renewed focus, not just physically but mentally. Last Tuesday was more than an operation. It now has become a metamorphosis of renewed opportunity. Give your business some much needed surgery, and I guarantee that just changing a few things will bring you much insight! Good luck!!!!! Success is only clear when you see it!
