Take a Risk Today

Today we welcome Yoga with Olga, who shares with us how life coaching and Bikram hot yoga have much in common. I’ve known Olga for many years through our business networking groups and she always offers gentle wisdom that’s spot on. Her blog today may remind you of Finding Nemo. In the film you’ll recall when Marlin and Dory are in the whale Dory tells him they need to let go. Marlin asks Dory if they’ll be all right and she replies she doesn’t know. This is unpredictability and being in tune with what the future holds.

Eighteen months ago, Olga guestposted on my blog, here’s that post, “Take a Jump with Me,” and it’s wonderful to welcome her back to my blog! Enjoy!

Life is unpredictable.  Many of us live under the impression that, through our calendars, cell phones, tablets and many other time-management tools we orchestrate our lives.  This is an illusion!

Some of my yoga students walk into class saying, “Oh, I didn’t sleep well last night, so I’m going to have a bad class.” or “I feel so strong; I’m going to ‘knock it out’ today.” And guess what?  The opposite happens.  As we say in Bikram yoga, “There are only two kinds of classes; a good class and a great class.  The only bad class is the one that you didn’t attend.”  When you walk into your yoga class with no expectations other than to do your best, you allow each moment to take its course.  By focusing on each movement that it takes to perform a yoga pose you are engaged in a mind/body connection that takes on its own creation.

Yoga is about the journey—enjoy the journey and learn to dance in the rain—do not only think about the destination, nor the final expression.  While I was teaching class; watching my students in their postures…I got a clear message of how important the journey is.  Yes, the final expression of a posture and reaching a destination has its value; yet remember to enjoy the process!

For many, unpredictability is scary.  Unpredictability and security are perspectives.  Consider this perspective:  “A job with regular hours, compensation and benefits guarantees that I will cover my expenses and projected responsibilities for the foreseeable future.  I’ve got life taken care of.”  Consider this, “As a writer, artist, singer and/or entrepreneur, my life is fueled by my creative juices and fed by the product(s) that come out of my inventions.”

How do you react to these statements?

In my prior career as a financial advisor, I counseled individuals and institutions on how to best invest their financial reserves.  Countless fiduciaries agonized over conserving principle while achieving the highest return on their assets. Many times these decisions included depriving themselves of:

**creative freedoms and expression

**present day opportunities for growth

**enjoyment of the present day

In the end, stock market crashes depleted more value to their financial portfolios than the perceived risk of stepping out in life.  For example, one individual wanted to leave her job in finance to be an artist.  She used funds (from her mother’s inheritance) to study art (in Italy) and eventually opened her own studio!  In contrast, I watched another family account for every penny earned and spent, only to watch their portfolio shrink by over 50% during the 1987 stock market crash.

In the end, this taught me that taking advantage of every moment’s opportunity is invaluable.  Yes, being out on your own as you look out over an uncertain future might feel shaky; however, I applaud you for the stark honesty of this lifestyle.  The future is unknown because it is the future!  It is we humans that do everything possible to construct all that is in our power for safety nets and some kind of predictability.

In life coaching, I encourage my clients to release as many known facts as possible during a coaching session and invite them to play with viewing life from different perspectives.  This frees the mind from old patterns and creates a clear space from which new ideas are created.  Do your best to keep a reasonable (whatever that means!) safety net to account for any major responsibilities.  Yet, trust that uncertainty is a part of life that has been with us as long as humans have existed.  It is we humans that have done everything within our power to safeguard our fears.  Look around the globe to witness others whose lives have been overwhelmed by natural catastrophes that were impossible to prevent (tsunamis, disease, floods, hurricanes, etc.)

Being prepared NOT to know is a true recognition that there is a power higher than ourselves.  If we are prepared to experience what life has to offer, we have to be open to unpredictability.  Then, not knowing what will happen becomes for us not a deficiency but a source of creativity.

“There is a place in the depth of our being that is protected and saved for ourselves, an inner, sacred space guarded by God’s presence. It is up to each one of us to find that place. Sometimes we only howl into it when we are broken or wounded and empty, but it is in and through that emptiness that we can find our way into the beauty that transforms us into strong, loving, wise and beautiful people.” ( from Gardening the Soul by Sister Stan)

Living in the Bible Belt: 45 Years Ago … and Today

When I arrived in a small town (500) in Eastern NC 45 years ago with my new husband (from that small town), I had no idea what was in store for an upper middle class Jewish girl who grew up outside of Boston and went to high school and college just south of San Francisco! Can you imagine? Bet you are smiling.

I’m wondering today … has anything really changed in 40 years? Or are there just more people doing the same things?

  1. In 1972 I got the full brunt of the small mindedness of Southern Baptists. I got to hear my husband’s uncle, a preacher, refer to blacks by the N word and Jews were referred to as kikes. So did almost everyone I met.
  2. The first thing almost every person asked me was “what church do you go to?”
  3. One of my dearest friends, in the early 90′s, a wife of a preacher (married 20 years) with a big position in the Southern Baptist Ministry, left her for his married secretary at the Ministry with whom he was having an ongoing affair.
  4. My own mother in law turned her head the other way early in her 50 year marriage to her husband cheating. She knew and said nothing. In fact her son (my husband) also kept the secret when he discovered it at 16.
  5. Moving in the early 80′s to Fuquay Varina, I was told point blank by several white parents of students at Wake Chapel School (then elementary through middle school) that the only reason their children were in that school was to keep them away from black children.
  6. In the late 80′s my daughter’s best friend (3rd of 3 children) wanted to attend high school with all her friends (everyone went to elementary, middle and high school together). Because her older sister got into some trouble in public school, her parents insisted she go to Wake Christian. She got pregnant before graduating high school. I learned also as a substitute Wake County teacher that the children whose behavior could not be managed by Wake County administrators, were sent to that private school.
  7. In the late 80′s the preacher of a small church in Fuquay Varina who refused to allow his own children to celebrate Christmas (and other holidays) was seen (by me) sneaking out of an X rated film with another elder early Sunday morning. Just a few hours before he would stand behind the pulpit and preach.
  8. Recently I learned a young man who was raised immersed in being a Baptist, took on sharing valuable business content by local experts, excluding women and blacks.

What I discovered for myself was the Southern Baptists who force fed everyone they spoke with about their being a Christian and why they are such good people … were not Christians at all! They were wolves in sheep’s clothing.  I did meet several real Christians … you may know one or two yourself … those are the people that LIVE it rather than speaking it and then doing whatever they want, even if it is in direct opposition to the teachings.

I’ve learned a lot over the past 45 years or so about people in my work in personal development. There are those that operate out of fear and use religion as a flag or cape as though THAT would make them good folks. (They actually believe it about themselves!) And there are those who walk the walk and do not judge others by whether they are a certain religion or not.

Married to a Baptist man for 30 years myself taught me that he was no different than a dominating amount of the rest of his Baptist partners … liars and cheaters in their personal lives and in their business lives. I know there are those who do not lie and cheat, but there are PRECIOUS FEW of them.

So why don’t we forsake organized religion? It’s leaders don’t walk the walk, so why would the congregation? I say they do not because mass mentality includes people that want to be led .. ‘sheeple.’ If everyone else is lying and cheating, particlularly the leaders, it makes it all right to do. Does it really?

And has anything really changed here in the Baptist South? What do you think?

What’s Your Theme Song For Today?

The sun is out today in the Raleigh metro area. If you know me well, then you know I can only go about 2 days without sunshine before I start to eat paste and climb the walls.

Today, there is a special skip in my step. The sun is beaming. I’m working from home. I’m waiting (ever so impatiently) for my website to be finished with its new look. And IT’S FRIDAY!!!!!

Most people know that Friday is my “Sharpen The Saw” day. If you are a 7 Habits follower, this will make sense to you. So part of my sharpening the saw is that I sing theme songs – well almost any kind of song around the house in my pajamas. Once I’ve had that third cup of coffee and a handful of Apple Jacks, I am a teenager again (at least in my mind).

It got me thinking about that show “Ally McBeal“. (Am I showing my age again?). I LOVED that show. I swear I cried when it went out of syndication. Ally would imaging Barry White signing at the oddest moments. She was quirky and just a wee bit mentally unstable . . . hummm, no I don’t identify with that at all. :o )

Anyway, it got me thinking about theme songs. Songs that represent certain moments in your life. Like when you need to be pumped up, you might hum, “Eye of the Tiger“, or the theme from Rocky (just pick one, I think there’ s like 5 of them).

Well today I am caught between theme songs, I’m feeling a little Aretha Franklin – so I’ve been screaming R.E.S.P.E.C.T. all morning (much to the dismay of my husband George, who is off today). Then I switched gears and started singing “Simply The Best” by Tina Turner. I love that feisty woman.

So tell me, if you had to choose a theme song for yourself today, what would yours be?

10 Reasons Why you need to Consider Mobile Marketing Today!

The Secret of Successful Marketing is…that it must never stop and it must adapt to changing circumstances. Marketing is a constant effort, for it is how a business is presented to the intended market.

1) Market Size – 5 Billion Plus Cell phone Users VS. 1.8 Billion Internet Users (almost 3x bigger).

2) Mobile Search – With the adoption of 3G and 4G mobile smart-phones, the volume of searches happening on mobile phones is expected to grow to 20% of all searches by 2012.

3) Instant
– 90% of messages or opened immediately or with in minutes of delivery.

4) Location Awareness – You can offer exclusive offering to people within a certain radius of your location. Example: Deliver a 10% coupon when a customer comes within 2 miles of your location.

5) Target-ability – Reaching the right people at the right time with the right message at the right cost has never been easier. You can put your message in the pocket of your exact client demographic.

6) ROI (Return On Investment) – Display area is much smaller on smart phones. This means each search yields far fewer results and thus higher click-through rates.

7) Measurable – You get to see where every lead came from, which converted to clients and where others turned around. The days of tracking marketing dollars have never been so detailed.

8) Redemption Rates – Mobile Coupons are 10 time higher than their email (or even newspaper) counterparts!

9) Opening Rate – Text message opening rate is 95% VS. Email which is 15%-20%.

10) Reach – Connect with YOUR Customers Anytime, Anywhere! Cell phones are 1 of 3 things people never leave home without!

I continue to be very interested in the latest news and tips on Mobile Marketing. I hope this helps you to start thinking about how to get started. Let me know if I missed anything. This is a complicated and highly evolving space so would love to hear your feedback.

I look forward to connecting with you!

Did You Break the Law Today?

Many of us who have started small businesses either don’t know that we are or believe we should not be subject to the same laws as big businesses. Regardless as to our belief, we have to be compliant with all regulations and laws pertaining to our perspective industry.

In order to avoid huge fines and penalties, we have to constantly research and adapt our practices. Laws concerning advertising, employment and labor, finance, intellectual property, online businesses, privacy and environment to name a few can be difficult to research and even more difficult to understand.

I am going to just focus on one today. The advertising laws govern all businesses as far as being truthful, backing claims, fairness, and product labeling. But, if your business concerns alcohol, automobiles, computers, internet services, health and fitness products, housing and real estate, or telemarketing, there are even more laws and regulations specific to each of these industries. We are not only expected to know and comply with all these laws and regulations as they exist, but we also must stay informed of the ever-changing requirements.

This must be a time consuming and therefore costly endeavor. Is there another way?

Twitter: “Fun, efficient and rewarding” – Today at 11:30 at the BNC and on MY Page

A latecomer to Twitter, I jumped in with enthusiasm as I discovered I could learn from some of the foremost leaders in social media, and some of the most technologically advanced experts in other fields, by subscribing to their Twitter feeds.

The two line (140 character) feeds, are just like seeing a list of headlines pass before you, allowing you at a quick glance to see what is of interest and what to ignore.

Some people are more social and like to share more personal notes. I’m interested in learning – the internet has amazing services and information and on Twitter, I get to have a team of experts pass their findings my way.

Today, Tuesday the 10th at the Business Networking Center in Cary, at 11:30, 919′s very own Martin Brossman and Wayne Sutton will give you the latest on what you need to know about Twitter.

There are many interesting, informational, useful vehicles on the internet. For me, bottom line about Twitter, is that it’s fun, efficient and rewarding.

Nice to Meet You, Last Night and Today

Last night at Oh Mulligans I had the chance to renew my friendships with a number of people I’ve met through inSide919 and Martin Brossman classes. Just seeing each other in another setting reinforced my sense of familiarity. I met and talked with about ten people I hadn’t met before. I saw several more who I recognized from inSide919 and will make a point next time I see them to introduce myself and visit.

I was very glad I made the 60 mile round trip from Apex to Wake Forest. The food was good, people were talking and it was a good time. I’m taking Bill Davis’ 100 Days to Abundance Class about jump starting business, and the message I’ve gotten so far, is that I need to meet you, and you, and you. Relationships grow businesses, and they sure do grow fun. Thank you all of you who came out.

Today I’ll also be out with an opportunity to meet new friends and old, at the Maserati of Raleigh dealership thanks to inSider Diogenes Ruiz.

I met Diogenes through Martin Brossman, called him up to see if I could chat with him, and from there embarked on a volunteer project that launched my work in social media marketing and publicity – while learning about some of the best socks on the planet – the only ones my husband wears now! (Sierra Club Socks)

Diogenes has a passion for luxury cars and is working at Maserati of Raleigh. When he called me about my Apex Massage for Women business and asked, “How about coming to our show room with your chair to give massage to our visitors and guests?” The answer was why not! Some people have imagination and creativity, daring and playfulness, and it’s a delight to see the ease with which they experiment and learn in life. Diogenes is one of those people. So I’m looking forward to being around him, to saying hello to anyone who drops in and to offering a rest on my massage chair to reduce the tension – like readjusting the seat belt so people can breathe.

This is just for fun. Just to meet some more people. Just to introduce more people to the dealership where Diogenes is working. Don’t know about you, but it takes a lot of guts for me to walk into a luxury car dealership. Today no courage needed, the doors are open and casual visitors are very welcome. So if you feel like it, just come.

Have fun today and this weekend. Summer’s well on it’s way to September and it’s Friday!
